The Middle Ground: Why September Is the Month We Sleep On

4 min read

We talk a lot about January. New year, new me, vision boards, resolutions, the whole production. And we talk about December too — the reflecting, the “what a year,” the countdown to a fresh start. January and December get all the press.

September? September just kind of… sits there. Quietly. Unbothered. Not asking for a toast or a hashtag.

And I think that's exactly why we sleep on it.

By now, we've settled into the year. The goals we set back in January have had time to do one of three things —

we've started working toward them..

we've finished them....or if we're honest...

we've stalled out somewhere in the middle and haven't looked at them since March.

But we're not at the end of the year yet either. We're not out of runway. We're in it — the middle. And the middle ground isn't loud. It isn't sexy. There's no confetti for September.

But what we do in this stretch quietly decides how proud we feel when December actually shows up.

This is the pivotal part. This is the part nobody claps for.

The Quiet Middle

Here's the thing about the middle ground: it doesn't announce itself. Nobody wakes up in September and feels the dramatic gong of “this is your moment.” It just feels like… a Tuesday. Another Tuesday, in a string of Tuesdays, that somehow adds up to your whole year.

But that's the trap. We wait for the big loud moment to take stock, and September never gives us one. So we scroll past it. We tell ourselves we'll deal with [whatever it is] “after the holidays” or “next year” — conveniently forgetting that next year starts with the exact same conversation we're avoiding right now.

Subtle doesn't mean unimportant. It just means it requires us to actually pay attention on purpose, instead of waiting for life to tap us on the shoulder.

"September doesn't hand you a finish line, it hands you a mirror."

Close the Open Loops

Here's an analogy I can't stop thinking about: your phone.

You know how your phone starts acting sluggish, the battery starts draining by 2pm, and it's not because you're doing anything different — it's because you've got forty-seven tabs open in the background that you forgot were even running? Half of them you don't even remember opening. One of them has probably been “loading” since July.

Our lives do the exact same thing.

We're all walking around with open loops running quietly in the background — the goal we half-started and never finished, the relationship we keep meaning to have an honest conversation about, the habit we said we'd drop, the idea we've been “getting around to” since spring.

None of it is dramatic enough to demand our attention.

But all of it is draining the battery.

September is the moment to go into settings and actually see what's running.

Not everything open needs to stay open.

Not everything open needs to be forced closed either.

Some of it just needs a decision — which brings me to the actual framework.

Pause. Pivot. Pursue.

Every open loop in your life right now falls into one of three categories. The work of September is sorting them honestly.

Pause — This is the goal or commitment that isn't wrong, it's just not now. Maybe the timing was off, maybe life happened, maybe you took on too much at once (be honest, we've all done it). Pausing isn't quitting. It's putting something down without guilt so you can actually pick it back up with intention later, instead of dragging it around half-finished for the rest of the year.

Pivot — This is the one that needs an honest look, not a funeral. The goal itself might still be right, but the approach isn't working. Maybe the way you've been trying to get there has been more exhausting than effective. A pivot says: I still want this, I just need a different road to it.

Pursue — This is the one you already know. You feel it every time you think about it — that little tug, that “I haven't given this my full effort yet.” This is the loop worth closing your other tabs for. This is where your remaining months of focus actually belong.

So — what in your life right now needs a pause? What needs a pivot? And what deserves your full pursuit before the year is out?

Why This Moment Matters

We tend to save the reflection for December, but by then, the year is basically decided. What we do with these next few months is what determines whether December feels like relief or regret. Whether you close out the year proud of what you built, or scrambling to explain to yourself why nothing on the list got touched since spring.

Closing the year strong doesn't start in December. It starts in the quiet middle — right here, right now, in the part of the year nobody's clapping for.

Maximizing your effectiveness isn't about adding more to your plate. It's about clearing enough room to actually move — closing what's draining you, redirecting what's not working, and staying consistent with what matters most.

Coming Soon: The 4th Quarter Reset

Speaking of clearing room — I'm putting together something to help you do exactly this work with intention: the 4th Quarter Reset.

This will be a space to get honest about your open loops, sort them into pause, pivot, and pursue, and walk into the last stretch of the year with a real plan instead of just vibes and a countdown clock.

More details (and dates) are coming soon — but I'll tell you now: spots will be limited, because this only works if it's intentional and intimate. If you know you want in, keep an eye out or reach out to grab your spot early.

Friends, September doesn't need to be loud to be important. It just needs you to actually show up for it. Go check your background tabs. You might be surprised what's still running.

Pause with peace. Pivot with purpose. Pursue with everything you've got.

With love,

Vanessa
